JAPAN fue una banda británica de new wave formada en 1974 y disuelta en 1982. Durante su existencia, la banda experimentó con varios estilos musicales, desde el glam rock hasta el synth pop y el new romantic. Los miembros originales de la banda eran David Sylvian (voz principal, guitarra y teclados), Mick Karn (bajo, saxofón, oboe), Steve Jansen (batería y percusión), Richard Barbieri (teclados y sintetizadores) y Rob Dean (guitarra principal). Aunque no tuvieron un gran éxito comercial al principio, su álbum “Quiet Life” de 1979 marcó el inicio de su ascenso, con un estilo New Romantic y canciones con influencias de jazz
