Birthday es el segundo sencillo del grupo islandés The Sugarcubes, lanzado en octubre de 1987. Es una de las canciones más conocidas y aclamadas de la banda, que mezcla el rock alternativo, el pop y el post-punk con la voz inconfundible de Björk, su cantante principal. La canción narra la fantasía de una niña que sueña con un caballo y un príncipe, y que se siente diferente al resto de su familia. La letra está llena de metáforas y contrastes, y la música crea una atmósfera mágica y envolvente.
El single fue un éxito tanto en Islandia como en el Reino Unido, donde fue elegido como el single de la semana por las revistas Melody Maker y NME, y como el número uno de la lista Festive Fifty de John Peel. Además, fue el primer sencillo internacional de la banda, y el que les abrió las puertas del mercado estadounidense. La canción fue incluida en el álbum debut de The Sugarcubes, Life’s Too Good, publicado en 1988. El single también contenía la versión islandesa de la canción, llamada Ammæli, que había sido lanzada previamente en el sencillo Einn Mol’á Mann en 1986.
Birthday es una canción que ha trascendido el tiempo y el espacio, y que ha sido versionada por numerosos artistas, como The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Mars Volta, The Dresden Dolls o Chvrches.
